Dave

Photo shoot for online use

Photographed in Trout Lake

I photographed Dave at Trout Lake Community Centre.

Vancouver photography offers us many nice places for different kinds of looks. I think Trout Lake is one of my favourites.

Not only do you have an indoor area, you also have the mountains, the lake and very nice architecture.

It’s a pretty reliable place for photographers in Vancouver. The indoor areas are great in case it rains on your photo shoot.

Dave said he looked through the portfolios of many photographers and settled on mine because my photos looked the most “natural”. Indeed, I strive to represent people as they would appear in real life.

Dennis & Son

Father and son photo shoot

Recreating an old photo in an East Van studio

Sometimes I get uncommon photo shoot requests like this one.

A Maple Ridge father, Dennis, wanted a photo shoot with his son. He wanted to recreate a photo he did with his father.

They came as a family. The three of them.

Dennis’s son was really young. He wouldn’t keep still or pay attention to the camera.

Enter the wonders of modern technology. Dennis’s wife brought a MacBook with YouTube playing. By moving the camera where we wanted her son to focus, we were able to get her son to mimic the look of the old photo.

These studio photos were done with a black background and a single light source, to their left. I had to play around the day before in order to try to mimic the lighting of the old photo, which seems to have come from the left.

Overall, this was a very exciting and interesting experience. It goes to show that saying “yes” to novel experiences is very important in developing one’s career.

Anne

Film industry colorist needed corporate headshots for marketing purposes

Headshot in Trout Lake Community Centre

Anne needed headshots quick.

She needed it for her company’s corporate website and so we arranged to shoot two days from the time she contacted me.

It was a difficult day because as Vancouver photographers know… weather doesn’t cooperate all the time.

It was a rainy and windy day, but when we met, there was a respite from the rain.

But the good thing about shooting in Trout Lake Community Centre is that there’s always sheltered areas. And the structures near Victoria Avenue look fantastic as they converge in the background.

I am very glad to be able to help Anne. We did it really quickly and she told me that she felt her experience was, “Painless.”

Anne did tell me she was camera shy, so I briefed her in the emails that we exchanged what we’d do. In the end, shooting a lot of photos helped.

I am just glad I could help Anne get things done quickly and that her photo is now up on a public website for presentation to the public.

Anne works as a colorist and she wanted her headshots black and white to match her colleagues’ photos on the corporate website.

Vinny

Photo shoot for online use and actor’s headshot

Photography in Vancouver/Burnaby

I photographed Vinny at the end of Boundary Road, on the Vancouver side.

Vancouver photographers take note! The end of Boundary Road is higher in elevation than most areas in Vancouver and that means you get a nice view of North Vancouver’s mountains.

I am really glad Vinny has chosen to use these photos on his social media too. I think headshots like these can be used in so many places that it’s worth making sure you get the right photographer for you.

My photography style prefers high-contrast, vibrant photos over artistic, painterly images. Natural images of headshots of people doing naturally happy things is my favourite.

Bobby

Needed photos for personal use

Photography in East Van

Bobby was one of my first customers and he’s really delightful and funny.

In 2017, as a new photographer who transitioned into hobbyist to professional, it was a bit nerve-wracking. I had to deliver results and people had to feel confident when they saw their headshots.

Vancouver photography also presents an issue: weather. Luckily, it stayed dry that day and cloudy weather meant for easier lighting.

After I sent him the samples, I was really glad Bobby came back with words of encouragement,

“Dude… so many good shots… this is going to take me forever to choose! Hahaha, but it’s a good problem to have.”

Referring to the photo on the left, he said, “This is the winner overall! I look like I should be on a bus stop or something hahaha”

That was very encouraging.

We met up to do the photo shoot in East Vancouver at Renfrew Community Centre. I like that place because you have a sheltered location for rain, you have the view of the mountains behind and a big plot of grassland for experimentation.
