Who can build me a website?

Who can build me a website? You can!

If you want to.

Scroll to the bottom for a questionnaire that will help you focus on what you need in a website.

You can build your own website

Building your own website has its advantages, including:

  • If you built it, you can modify it
  • You save money by paying for your subscriptions (domain name, stock images, hosting, etc.)

There are downsides:

  • Depending on how you built it, you might have issues finding someone who will work with it
  • If your techniques aren’t refined, it can lead to poor performance, poor user experience
  • You might get trapped and can’t scale the website

What is the process for building a website?

  • Buy a domain
  • Find web hosting service
  • Deliver design
  • Design logo
  • Develop website

This is generally the flow for building a website. In order to go through these stages, you will need a project manager, web designer and web developer.

Best website builder: build a WordPress website. Forget anything else

If you want to build your own website, try WordPress.

Almost all small-scale website can be built on WordPress without much hassle.

If there’s anything you need beyond a simple brochure website, then you can generally get it done using plugins.

The plugins allow users to add features such as contact forms, galleries, and social media integration, while the themes provide a range of design options for users to choose from.

Wix and Squarespace makes it easier because their website builder is more intuitive, but it can cost a lot more over time.

Why should I not use another website builder?

There are many website builders out there. Web hosts like GoDaddy, Hostinger, Gator have their own website builder. For personal websites, they’re fine.

Wix and Squarespace are more advanced website builders that allow you to have an online store. Perfect for a small business.

The only catch is that you must know whether or not these websites will serve you over the long term.

If you suddenly need to have some custom functionality, such as the ability to integrate a price estimate calculator, online store, SEO tool, Google Analytics (or Tag Manager) or any other premium plugin or feature, WordPress is flexible enough to deal with that.

If you started off with another website builder, then you are likely stuck within the constraints of the website builder.

This is a mistake I see often. People want to start their websites as soon as possible and as cheaply as possible. They go for the path of least resistance. Unfortunately, the path of least resistance at the beginning can become an issue further down the road.

I want to hire a web developer

First up, here’s a list of common reasons why people would want to hire a web developer.

You want custom functionality

Do you want your website to do something specific?

Maybe a price calculator?

Perhaps you want to sell paid content?

One of the most common reasons to hire a web developer is to have a custom-designed website that meets the specific needs of your business.

You want a custom design

Chances are, if you went with a site builder, you will be tied down to the designs and themes that they offered.

Hiring a web designer (not a developer) can create a unique design that reflects your brand’s identity and values, and ensures that your website stands out from your competitors.

Good web design is pretty essential if you are looking to create a personal website or if you are a professional trying to make an impression on your clients.

Your time is valuable

While it may seem like a significant investment to hire a web developer, it can actually be more time and cost-efficient in the long run.

A web developer can build a website quickly and efficiently, saving you time and allowing you to focus on other aspects of your business. Additionally, a well-designed website can lead to increased conversions and revenue, making it a worthwhile investment.

Where to find web developers?

If you want to hire someone, then you will need to know where to look.

Ideally, you can find someone locally who will reply to all your questions and provide you with prompt service.

But if money is tight, then you might want to consider getting someone online who might do it for much less.

Freelance web developer

A freelance web developer is probably the first person that you will hire.

Freelance web developers are the most affordable type of labour, especially when compared to a web development agency.

When you approach a freelance web developer, it would be ideal to view their portfolio and ask whether they do both the web development and the web design. These two aspects are distinct.

I am able to do both, so that really helps smooth the production process, and my portfolio is on the front page of this website.

Web development agency

Chances are, you will do better with a freelancer or a free website builder because hiring a web development agency is expensive. Basically, a freelancer is like hiring one person on your team while hiring a web development agency is like hiring a website designer, web developer, search engine optimization specialist, a project manager and other roles that can provide you with advanced features beyond what a single freelancer can do (everybody’s skill and time is limited).

Consequently, your website cost skyrockets. Of course, having a team behind you allows you to get a more professional looking website with advanced features.
